Volunteering

PTV’s volunteers come in all shapes and sizes! PTV has many volunteer opportunities, from one-time projects to long-term commitments, open to the Los Angeles community. We have something for everyone:

English Tutors:
For the vast majority of our clients, English is not their native language. English tutors meet with clients one-on- one in a conversational setting to help them improve their English skills. Tutors enable PTV’s clients to feel more comfortable using English, which is particularly helpful to clients while they are seeking employment. Volunteer English tutors must be patient and enthusiastic about working with clients from another country.

Administrative Support:
The PTV administrative staff can always use an extra hand around the office. Typical administrative tasks include helping with mass mailings, data entry, pre-event and post-event tasks, making phone calls, filing, database clean-up, etc. Administrative volunteers will work out a schedule based on their availability and staff needs. The recommended time commitment varies depending on PTV’s current needs and the volunteer’s schedule.

Research Support:
Volunteers interested in working with the research team need to have at minimum a BA in psychology or a BSW. MSWs and Masters in Psychology are a plus.  Volunteers should have completed at least one course in social statistics, at least one research methods course and/or have prior research experience in a social services field. Data entry skills using Excel are necessary; SPSS statistical software is a benefit.  Attention to detail and accuracy are a must.

Event Volunteers:
The agency also offers one-time volunteer projects for those with limited time who may want to help out at a special event or on other short-term projects prior to an event. For our annual Human Dignity Awards Dinner, there are many tasks to be completed before the event. On the day of the event, we usually need help with various aspects of set-up, registration, clean-up, etc.

Professional Volunteers:
PTV is able to provide extensive medical and clinical services thanks to our professional volunteers. Specifically, we look for general surgeons, orthopedists, neurologists, pain specialists, dentists, chiropractors, and podiatrists. If you are a medical professional and would like to volunteer with PTV providing services to our clients, please contact our Medical Director, Dr. Jose Quiroga at jquirogamd@aol.com.

Board of Directors:
PTV is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.  The board sets policy, reviews organizational continuity, fundraises and does strategic planning. In return, PTV provides training and leadership opportunities. If you are interested in Board service, please email Board President, Neils Frenzen at nfrenzen@law.usc.edu.

Contact:
For more detailed information on volunteer opportunities, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Nina Popoff, at volunteer@ptvla.org.  All potential volunteers must complete an application form and submit it to PTV via fax or email – volunteer@ptvla.org.
