"For the survivors, torture is a past that will not go away. But at least the survivor is no longer in the wilderness"

  The Healing Club

Relaxing on the beach on a recent Saturday in Santa Monica, Leontine recalled finding refuge from the horror she experienced half a world away in her native Democratic Republic of Congo.

“The people at PTV were the first to believe my story,” said Leontine, who came to the U.S. in 2005. “I was raped and when I first arrived here, no one believed me. But now the world sees what is happening in Congo. My story is now very real.”

Leontine was one of many survivors participating in the “Healing Club.” Organized several times a year by PTV, the Healing Club provides a space for survivors to share stories, laugh and see old and new faces. For the thousands of torture survivors who walk through PTV’s doors, the Healing Club serves as a safe haven that offers a sense of community while helping them heal and rebuild their lives.

At last weekend’s gathering, some survivors joyfully described being reunited with family members or winning asylum status. Others simply expressed their gratitude to PTV for helping them start over after having arrived here with nothing.

Leontine, who has become a spokesperson for the women and children still experiencing torture and suffering in Congo, credits PTV with empowering her to fight for justice in her native country. “PTV's support and services have changed my life. I am now ready to be the voice of my people. I want justice for everyone.”
